Mathew Street Gallery : Robert Whitaker
Robert Whitaker is responsible for some of the most legendary photographic images of the Beatles taken between 1964 and 1966. During these years he was with them night and day and catalogued practically their every move with his camera. His work has adorned album covers, promotional features, pop magazines and more. Many of the iconic images are instantly recognisable to fans and his documentation of the more private Beatle moments continue to fascinate. His work is considered surreal, and Lennon referred to him as being a surrealist.
After impressing Brian Epstein with photographs he took to accompany an interview, Robert joined the Beatles on tour, at rest and at play. Although probably best known for the infamous so-called “Butcher Cover” shot (it’s real title is Somnambulant Adventure) most Beatles fans are also aware of the classic images he took during the Paperback Writer/Rain sessions at Chiswick Park and Abbey Road Studios.
