Mathew Street Gallery : Astrid Kirchherr
For many Astrid provided the defining images of the Beatles’ Hamburg years. Her striking portraits are instantly recognisable and have inspired similar images including the cover of With The Beatles.
She was introduced to the band by Klaus Voormann and helped refine and define their Hamburg image, eventually falling in love and becoming engaged to Stuart Sutcliffe.
In her work you can see The Beatles evolve from the tough Liverpool rock and roll band to the more image-orientated mop-top pop group that would take the world by storm.
Her photographs are the most enduring of the young band and it is little wonder they were used so heavily in the Anthology programes to illustrate the early days on the German club scene.
